| kundansen's Full Review: Sony VAIO PCV-R539DS PC Desktop |
I'm a graduate student in computer graphics, and we purchased this system for our graphics lab - and this gives machines 3 times it's cost a decent run for their money. Somehow Sony components gel together much better than most other machines - looking at the specifications, this comes in the basic 128MB, 650MHz configuration, but it somehow performs at least as good as a Dell we have that has nearly 400Mb RAM and a 750MHz processor, and costs in excess of $4500.
For the home user, this is a great buy - which is why I went forward to buy one for myself from UBid auctions. Runs great on windows, even better on Linux, has a bunch of superb digital software that allows you to produce movies easily from your digital camcorder, or grab frames from the digital camera, with the high speed ILink cable.
The CD-RW and DVD drive really drives home the decision to buy this machine - even assembled machines with this configuration cost as much, and this one comes with the Sony warrantee and brand name. At 8x writing speeds, making copies of CDs is such a breeze. The DVD is among the bests I have seen yet - no frames skipped, etc. Computer games are totally cool on this - I have the graphics accelerator that came with the machine, nothing special.
Even though the speakers are pretty small, they have an amazing clarity and 3D effect. Might do good to add a powered subwoofer, but I'm still sticking on to the basic set.
To really benefit from this machine, get a good monitor - at least a 19" - otherwise the DVD and the amazing graphics capabilities will go in waste.
In all, a brilliant machine.
