| jeffs320's Full Review: Sony VAIO PCV-R547DS PC Desktop |
Working for Sony Tech Support, I knew that this was a really tight system before I ever even got to play with one. One problem around here is that new models are released and we start receiving calls about new models, and we have never even heard of the model before. Then we get to know what the problems are with the units and which ones are good, and then finally we get new product training after we have been supporting the new model line for several weeks.
Well, the first time I got to play with the 547DS I knew I had to have one. But the price was just a little too high for me at that point. I personally like to buy an older model computer for a lot less money rather than buy it new and pay out the nose for it.
So now, about a year after this model was released, I just happened to be looking around the internet while I was bored at work and ACCIDENTLY found one of these on EBay (well, my wife didn't believe it was an accident, either). The price was right, so I naturally bought it and told my wife about it when she came home and it was already set up (nothing like a nice suprise waiting for her when she comes home!)
After I did my time in purgatory (sleeping on the couch, that is), she came by and took a look at it, and immediately fell in love with it. It has a P3 600 MHz chip (which was top of the line a year ago) and it has all the software for video editing, so it works with my Sony Digital Camcorder very nicely.
If you ask me, the best way to get computers is to buy it cheap and then upgrade it. That is what I did with this computer, so now the RAM is maxed out and I have an 850 MHz chip in it, and it is smoking. Add the upgrades to the original Software Package that Sony includes on the Digital Studio Computers, and you get one really sweet deal.
The only thing I didn't like about it is...well...nothing. It is a great computer, and I got it for a great price.
OH, and in case anyone has been keeping track of my reviews and thinks no normal person has this many computers, you are right. What I do is get them cheap, buy some relatively cheap NIC Cards (Network Cards) and I run a Network at a friend's house (my wife won't let me keep ALL that computer stuff in our house). So then what I do is instead of everyone getting online from their own houses and playing games, I (for a small fee) have them come out and play on networked systems so they are killing their buddies that are in the same room as them. That is how I can afford to keep buying these computers.
But with the CDRW drive in this computer (considering my old one was about dead) I had an excuse for buying it, cause I can use it at home and move the junkier computer I had at home out to the network for gaming.
