| KrYpToNiX's Full Review: Sony VAIO PCV-J100 PC Desktop |
The Sony PCV-100 is a snazzy multimedia system with a 166-MHz Pentium MMX processor and whiz-bang features guaranteed to make the neighbors jealous. The sleek minitower system is part of Sony's consumer VAIO product line, and it has ATI 3D Rage graphics, an excellent 16-bit sound system, a fat 3.1GB Enhanced IDE hard disk, and a 33.6-Kbps modem. Sony bundles a thick booklet of CDs with games and reference material. This is a moderately priced home system, but there are little or no compromises for the home computer user. Using Intel-developed MMX application tests the PCV 90 delivers an MMX rating of 143 (larger numbers denote better performance).
The User's Guide has detailed instructions and drawings describing the set up of this system. It also has color-coded cabling, simplifying set-up. Sony pre-installs VAIO Space Screen software. The optional, matching 17" monitor has a speaker on each side, and a sub-woofer in the base.
The motherboard has four 72-pin SIMM memory slots and the case has two open 5 1/4" drive bays. Sony thoughtfully provides a map of the motherboard showing all connections and jumpers. Another nice touch is the sliding cover that hides the floppy and CD ROM drive openings.
NSTL assesses the performance of each system with a suite of applications-based and low-level InterMark tests. To calculate performance scores we compare the results of each test against the performance of a standard machine (for desktop systems we use a Pentium 100MHz commercial grade desktop) and generate a ratio based on a score of 1 for the standard machine. Thus a score of 2 means that a system is twice as fast as our test standard. Scores above 1.5 indicate a fast machine.
