| Gr8ful's Full Review: Sony VAIO PCV-L620 PC Desktop |
This computer is a combination of desktop and laptop technology. A very sleek and light weight computer with an attractive design. This model features the Intel Pentium III 500MHz processor. Sony has built a fantastic machine here with all the bells and whistles any computer user would want.
The Sony Vaio PCV-L620 computer has a 4.8x DVD ROM which reads CDROM at 24X and is capable of reading CDR, CDRW and audio CD. It has 2-400Mbps iLink ports (basically fire wire ports), one in the front for easy access and one in the rear. This machine is excellent for video editing and recording. It also has 2 USB ports, one in front and one in the rear.
With built in Memory Stick Media slot, transferring files from your PDA or digital camera using the Memory Stick is simple and quick. Another feature of this computer is a built in Type II P.C.M.C.I.A. socket. This is the cardbus interface laptops use for peripheral card upgrades and this one supports zoomed video. This is especially nice for adding external devices to the computer and can be removed or used in your laptop without a difficult removal process.
The monitor comes with this computer and is a 14.1" LCD TFT active matrix monitor. This monitor is very bright and displays brilliant color. Even so, it does increase the price of the computer drastically and it is very delicate. Speakers are built onto the sides of the monitor and even though they are small they have excellent sound quality and have descent volume.
The internal workings are of quality make and design but are extremely proprietary. Even with that given, they are of sound design and craftsmanship. It has a 13GB UDMA 33 hard drive and 128MB of PC100 memory and is upgradeable to 256MB. The video is built in ATI Rage LT pro 3D accelerator with 8MB of SGRAM which is not shared so it doesn't borrow from the system memory. It has Aureal A3D High Fidelity 3D sound built in and a built in V.90 data/fax modem.
The keyboard that comes with it is a light weight keyboard with foldable wrist rest. You also get a scrolling wheel mouse. This computer is great for people who need a computer with a small footprint as it takes up less than half the desk space of other computers in it's class and price range.
The only drawback to this computer is the price. The manufacturers suggested retail price is $2,299.99. But when you add in the software package you get it actually isn't bad at all. The software you get included with the computer consists of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works 4.5, Adobe Premier 5.1 LE, Adobe Photo Deluxe Home Edition, Sony DVGate software, Microsoft Encarta 99, Microsoft Works Suite 99, just to name a few. You get about 7 more titles and other Sony software as well.
I recommend this computer to anyone wanting a notebook sized computer with the power of a full sized mid-tower machine, and the convenience of a workstation.
