| jeffs320's Full Review: Sony VAIO PCV-L640 PC Desktop |
The Best part about the PCVL640 is that the case is small. If you are limited on desk space, like in an office environment for example, then the L640 will work great for you.
Like Sony's Digital Studio computers, the L640 comes with the i.Link (firewire) port for importing video from a digital video camera or for other firewire devices. Naturally, it also comes with all of the software required for importing, editing, and then exporting this video as well. The importing and exporting is handled by a Sony Proprietary software called DVGate Motion, with it's little brother DVGate still for importing still pictures as well. The actual editing is done in a Limited Edition of Adobe Premiere (Premiere LE) that has all of the main functions of the full version, but it just does not include all of the extra features (I believe the full fversion has more transitions for example).
Also, like the digital studio computers, the L640 comes with a CDRW drive and Adaptec Easy CD Creator so that you can create your own Audio or Data CDs...and it definitely supports MP3s so for all of you Napster fans...
There is also an Ethernet Card already installed so if you are looking to Network the computer or hook up DSL or a Cable Modem, then it's all ready for you without having to open the case and dig around in that little box trying to install the card.
The only thing I do not like about the L series computers from Sony is the fact that there is little room for expansion. I mentioned that the L640 has a CDRW drive installed, but the older models had the DVDROM drive. Marketing decided that more people would rather have the CDRW drive, so the DVDROM is not included anymore. SO, it's either one or the other. Also, if you just consider the size of the case and everything installed, there is only one free expansion slot and one slot for additional memory, and then your case is filled.
So, basically, if you are interested in expanding upon the computer after you purchase it, you should go with one of the Digital Studios. If you just need a small case and don't plan on upgrading, then the L series will work perfectly for you.
