| jeffs320's Full Review: Sony VAIO PCV-LX800 PC Desktop |
First of all, let me say no internal floppy drive. No Parallel port. No DVDROM drive, just CDRW. If you can't deal with that, then don't buy the computer.
In my personal opinion, if you are going to buy an L series desktop from Sony, then this is definitely the one to get. This is the top of the line of this model series, with the LX700 trailing a little behind. The L series desktops are the slimtop desktops, and although I personally like the towers so I have room for expansion, this line works great for offices and people who don't have a lot of space for a computer so just want something small.
OK, here's the rundown in case you haven't heard. Parallel ports (the normal printer ports) and Floppy Disks are going away. Say Bye Bye. And if you are thinking about buying a USB to Parallel converter to use your old printer with the USB connection, good luck. Don't call Sony with any problems, because you will sit on hold for 30 minutes or so just to be told to call the printer manufacturer and/or the adapter manufacturer. Sony will not guarantee that these converters will work, and not to be rude, but they don't care, either (yes, that is what I do for a living, I work tech support and have to give people this bad news all the time)
I personally don't care for the L series computers because of the lack of upgradeability compared to a tower computer, but like I said, if you are looking for something that doesn't take up a lot of space, then this will work for you.
As with all other Sony computers, this comes with the i.Link (Firewire) port and has all the software for importing, editing, and exporting video. It also has Windows ME which (supposedly) is more user friendly when it comes to Multimedia support, so I guess that is a good thing.
The only thing I really don't like about this system is WinME. There are a lot of helpful utilities in WinME that make life a lot easier when you have problems with your system, but it eats memory like you wouldn't believe. If you buy any system with WinME on it, plan on upgrading your memory as soon as possible, because you will need it.
