| ddh3rd's Full Review: eMachines etower 466id PC Desktop |
For six months now, i have used an E-machines E-tower 466id at home. It has been an interesting experience, using a "budget PC" for what can sometimes be pretty intense work. The point I hope to make in this review is that for a person on a tight budget (i.e. me!), a machine like this can work for you if you use it intelligently.
The specifications for the E-tower 466id are as follows:
466 Mhz Celeron Processor
64 MB SD-RAM (I upgraded to 96, an almost essential thing to do)
8.4 GB HD
5x DVD-ROM
56k Internal Modem
Since I have owned this computer, my use of it has expanded greatly. When I bought it my main use for it was pure, simple web surfing. Since then I have become a webmaster (almost full-time). I also use graphics software which can exhaust a system pretty fast. Also, I tend to stretch my luck to the limit by trying to run multiple pay-to-surf viewbars while surfing now. That's just a background on how I use my computer.
Now to get to the point. As an ignorant computer user, when i first bought it that is, I tried to download everything I could find off of the internet. Not only that I tried to put it all on my desktop! I also installed an ancient version of Norton SystemWorks, which did much more harm than it did good. The machine became so slow, and crashed so much, that I literally almost gave up on it.
About two months ago I figured I'd try uninstalling all the trash I had on my machine and clearing off the desktop. Aside from a few programs refusing to uninstall, it was a miracle. Ever since then, I have been able to do all of the tasks I want to do quickly, efficiently, and with no crashes! The only things I have kept on my desktop are My Computer, Recycle Bin, Network Neighborhood, My Documents, Internet Explorer, and 3 personal folders. I don't really know why it's been important to write the last 2 paragraphs except that I don't want anybody to make the same mistakes I have.
Other problems I have had are bugginess in the Mediamatics DVD software, and a modem that freezes far too often for me. (When the modem freezes, you can't access anything on the web unless if you take time to disconnect, restart your computer, and reconnect.)
I am giving my computer a 4-star rating because it does all that I need it to do, which is quite a bit. A $600 E-Machines will never compete with a $5,000 Dell, but it's an awesome value for what you pay.
