| op1500's Full Review: 3Com U.S. Robotics Faxmodem 56K Analog Modem (81-0... |
I have owned and sold dozens of modems over the last 15 years, Hayes, Rockwell, Bocca and on and on. I now own 4 modems, all USR. Two are external (desktops) and two are PCM/CIA (laptops). Why? Because they are well worth every penny. Recently I woke up to a massive T-Storm, I got up and isolated my equipment.....to late. After everything cleared out I did an equipment check and found my 4 year 10 month old upgraded (via EEPROM) sportster had bought the E-Farm. A quick call to 3Com got me my RMA# and within 7 working days I had a shiny new one squealing away on the net. Gotta love a 5 year warranty don't ya? Over the course of the next week I received multiple panic calls from clients that could not get on the net (withdrawl symptoms of the highest order). It turned out that I ended up replacing 9 lesser modems that got shuffled loose that same evening. All were less than 2 years old and not one was considered a warranty item. I explained to each person the wisdom of owning USR modems, 4 listened, the others, well...I always value a return customer.
As far as dial up connection speeds go, the people next door have the same age phone lines as me, the same dial up service and are technically closer to the switch than I am. However they choose to go with a Diamond vs the USR. They think it's great to connect at 36-40K. Personally I reconnect if I link up lower than 49K.
Ease of use? Easy, I have never had a USR fail to install itself on any system I have set up (try saying that for other modems). I case your wondering (and even if not) these OS's include Win3.1 (which translates to DOS), Win95, Win98 & SE, WinNT SP4-6, Linux (Red Hat and Caldera) and even some oddball OS that controls a cutting laser (the manufacturer insisted that it would not work..ok guys what ever you say).
Yes they are higher priced than most others, I don't see this as a problem. You want to pay the Zoltrix or Phoebe or Davicom price you will get exactly what you pay for (the headaches and higher blood pressure is thrown in free).
