If you have read my profile you will know that I have worked tech support for an ISP (Internet Service Provider). After speaking with several thousand customers about connectivity and modem issues, you tend to grasp the more reliable products out there.
When I ran my training classes all of the machines had a 3Com 56K Faxmodem External modem. Let me go over a few of the details with you:
Installation: This modem requires an adaptor be plugged into a 110 outlet. It has serial out for your PC, and two phone ports, one for input from phone line and one for output to phone or other device. On most external modem that you find if you hold them up to look at the back of the modem the port on the outside or left is for the phone line from the wall. If you are looking at the back of this modem it is also on the left. Plug the AC Adaptor in, plug the Phone line in, and Plug the serial cable into an available COM port on the PC. Put your 3Com CD in the CD-Rom drive and when the auto run loads close it. If you are running any version of Windows 95 or newer OS all you should have to do is re-boot your machine. When the hardware wizard open point it to you CD-Rom drive.
Support: I have never had to call 3Com for support personally, so to rate there support team would not be fair.
Cost: I picked up 20 of them at a very reasonable price. They cost me about $120 a piece. For the ease of use with some older machine it was a perfect match.
4 Months Later: All 20 of them are still running hard!
