When I was building my computer, I didn't want to use up a slot with an ISA modem (PCI modems are a gamble with Linux; they can be Winmodems). I had always had excellent results with 3Com/USR products, and I figured that the 56K External would be an excellent modem for me. I was right! Having never owned an external before, I found it extremely easy to use and install, once I got the required serial cable. It's nice to have the volume control on the side of the modem, and it's neat to be able to diagnose problems just with the lights on the top! A hearty recommendation.
One cautionary note: apparently external modems can get damaged in lightning storms/power surges more easily than internal modems. I didn't know this, and so I didn't unplug my modem when we had a series of storms a few weeks ago. As a result, this modem won't "hang up" by itself anymore -- after it disconnects from a call, it won't get a dial tone on the next call out because, apparently, it's still using the line. I have to shut it off and on again after each call if I want to redial. This is especially annoying when I get busy signals! I have to dial, hear the busy signal, wait for the OS to disconnect from the serial port, flick the modem off and then on, tell the OS to dial out... I don't consider this a shortcoming of the 56K External; it's more of a user error issue.
