| magika's Full Review: ADI Corporation MicroScan G700 17 inch CRT Monitor |
A few weeks ago, I knew next to nothing about monitor technology. I assumed that bigger was better and stuck to NEC and Viewsonic. Then I did my homework, and eventually purchased this monitor. I could have had a 19" Viewsonic monitor with better dot pitch instead for the same price, but I'm extremely happy with my decision.
The first thing that caught my eye was the flat screen. Normally, a monitor (just like a TV) bulges outward. Now you can get a video tube with a flat surface; no bulge. After a bit of reading, and a trip to the local computer store to try it myself, it turns out that the flat screen is far easier on the eyes than the bulge. After about 20 minutes of getting used to no bulge, it also looks better. The bulge warps the image ever so slightly, and although I was used to compensating, it definitely made a better experience to have a normal, flat image. Not to mention that it uses the Sony Trinitron tube, easily the highest quality tube on the market today.
The other major plus for the unit is the aperture grille technology. Again, lots of reading combined with a trip to the computer store to compare this to the competing shadow masking technology. Maybe competing is too strong a term. Aperture grille blows shadow masking away. It's brighter, it's clearer, it's crisper. I love it. I'll never buy another shadow masking monitor again. For the first time, I love setting high resolutions for my Windows desktop, because now I can read the tiny text. No blurring at all.
Also in its favor is an incredibly easy to use menu system. You can adjust just about everything (including a host of options that I don't even know what to do with), but it's easy to do. I didn't have to read a manual to figure out the menus - just push the menu button. It's set up as a logical decision path, so you don't have to scroll through seventeen different menus to find the option you're looking for. Just choose the category, then choose the option. Very slick.
The only drawback that I've found with this monitor is the price tag. It's quite a bit more expensive than your average 17" monitor. On the other hand, I think it's well worth it. In this case, you definitely get what you pay for.
