| KickinA's Full Review: Mag Innovision InnoVision 800 CRT Monitor |
After refunding a Sony G400 with a focus problem, I decided to give the MAG 800V a try.
I saw a PC MAGAZINE review, that rated this monitor as an Editors choice. I picked up the 800V for about $360US dollars at Walmart. The first thing I noticed is the fact that the tube is quite round, making it seem almost like a fishbowl, especially after using a perfectly flat Trinitron tube.
The sharpness of this monitor is good, however not as fine as a good Trinitron tube. The color and contrast are also good, but also not in the same class as some higher end monitors. My 800V also exhibited quite a noticeable moire that could not be completely corrected with the available controls.
This monitor features a "JOG" dial that allows one to easily adjust a variety of settings, by rotating a large dial on the face plate. The case is quite compact for a 19", and is also lighter than the Sony G400 I had. The monitor case is also filled with venting holes all over the back that looks like someone randomly sprayed it with a machine gun. The randomly spaced holes actually give the case a nice "artsy" look to it.
Overall, the 800V is a good monitor for the money. However, do not expect the picture quality of this monitor to exceed top end models, as the PCMAG review suggests. In fact, the validity of the PC MAG reviews is suspect, as PC MAG gets the test monitors directly from the manufacturer. This allows manufacturers to "tweak" or "soup up" their test monitors, and may not be representative of what consumers can actually buy at the store.
