Product: MagInnovision 810FD 19(18)" Trinitron monitor
I bought this monitor because I was pleased with my old 17" (MagInnovision XJ700T). For the most part I am pleased with the 810FD. It has a perfectly flat screen and displays graphics beautifully.
The monitor does have some flaws that I was surprised to see. First, the text at the corners is slightly blurry. Now, I don't have enough experience with 19" monitors to know if this is common or not so this may be a null point. Another problem is of screen geometry. This is not what you think... I mean you can set up the monitor so that it is edge to edge etc, and it looks great. Then for no reason the monitor will slightly shift the display left or right, or up or down. You then have to adjust everything again. The first thing I noticed when I plugged the monitor into my system was that my boot up screen was shifted very far over to the left, so far so, that I could not see my RAM being totaled up. This was easily fixed by hitting pause and making the screen adjustments and saving. However, if I hit reset on the monitor, I have to got through the whole process again. When Windows loaded up with a solid color background, I noticed a slight dark halo effect closer to the edges of the screen. According to MagInnovision this halo effect and also the slightly blurry text is normal and expected due to the physics of the electron beam(read the explanation at the MagInnovision web site). This is where my inexperience comes into play though. I don't have the opportunity to actually compare, side by side, different 19" monitors. So, I don't know if these problems are common or not. Nonetheless, here is my conclusion:
Out of 10 (1=worst, 10=best):
Graphics: 9 (games look excellent!)
Text: 7.5 (because of blurry text at corners only)
Controls: 10 (I think the JAG control system is great)
Price: a tentative 6.5 (I could have bought a Sony or Mitsubishi for a little more and these might not have the problems listed above. However, if other high end monitors have same problems I would score this a lot higher)
Overall look of monitor: 9 (the monitor is pleasing to look at with a relatively small bezel)
Features: 8.5(very good refresh rates, supports very high res. (~1900x1400), great dp @ 0.24) No extras like BNC connectors etc.
OVERALL = 84%
PS. It was nearly impossible for me to find any reviews on Mag monitors. I hope this helps someone out there who is shopping for a new monitor.
UPDATE:FEB 15/2002
THE MONITOR DIED ON ME A FEW WEEKS BEFORE THE NEW YEAR. NO WARNING, JUST ONE DAY IT WAS WORKING, THE NEXT DAY IT'S DEAD. I FINALLY GOT A HOLD OF MAG INNOVISION SUPPORT... THEY SAID MY MONITOR WAS NOT WARRANTIED IN CANADA!! I GOT P-I-S-S-E-D AND PHONED AGAIN. THEY SAID IT WAS WARRANTIED IN CANADA BUT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR SHIPPING AND LABOR. LOOKED AT MY WARRANTY CARD, IT SAYS NOTHING ABOUT PAYING FOR LABOR. I TOLD THEM THIS SO NOW THEY WILL HONOUR THE WARRANTY CARD I HAVE. UNFORTUNATELY, IT TURNS OUT THAT MAG INNOVISION DOES NOT DO REPAIRS IN CANADA, SO NOW I HAVE TO SHIP IT TO CALIFORNIA. IT LOOKS LIKE SHIPPING WILL BE A FEW HUNDRED BUCKS!! I REALLY REGRET BUYING THIS MONITOR NOW. I RECOMMEND YOU STAY CLEAR OF THIS MONITOR AND THIS COMPANY, THEY SUCK!
