| dkozin's Full Review: NEC MultiSync LCD1810 (Black) 18 inch LCD Monitor |
I was lucky enough to purchase the NEC LCD1810 18.1” LCD monitor for $421 from one of the dead startup companies that sells its assets. The monitor is almost brand new and is black in color.
Setup
The package weighs 25 pounds and my arms are still sore, because I had to carry it for a while and it’s not too convenient to hold.
The package had several parts that I haven’t used when attaching the monitor to the stand. Since the monitor might have been used, it had a small square metal plate attached to the Monitor itself with 4 screws and I found another one in the box. The 4 holes in the stand are located in the same pattern as the 4 holes that held the plate to the monitor, but I couldn’t figure out how to attach these two squares together and then to the stand (the box also contained 5 longer screws).
The manual in several languages describes the attachment/detachment procedure with no mention of the plates, and is not too detailed. So I just unscrewed the plate from the monitor and used the longer screws from the box to attach the stand to the monitor. I also have some plastic spare parts left.
If you know what these metal square plates are and how to deal with them, please leave a comment or email me. Although the current configuration works fine, I still think I am missing something.
The separate power supply is included as well as standard analog monitor cable. You can also connect the monitor using RGBHV, but you have to have the video card that supports this and buy cables.
The stand allows to move the monitor up and down (the movement up is simplified by the mechanism in the stand that lowers the force you have to apply to move it up, after all it’s quite heavy), rotate it 90 degrees and tilt it up and down.
The monitor can be used in both landscape (standard) and portrait positions (software that rotates the picture is supplied).
The CD also contains the INF file that allows Windows to “know” the range of settings for this monitor. The recommended resolution for this 18.1” LCD is 1280x1024 at 60Hz refresh rate. Although the scaling is pretty good when you use different resolutions (i.e. 800x600), the 1280x1024 is much better.
Picture
The picture at 1280x1024 is excellent. The 18.1” LCD is about the same size as you get if you buy a 19” CRT monitor, since the LCD monitors are sold by the actual screen size and not the size of the case itself. The picture doesn’t get much worse when viewed at an angle and my eyes don’t get as tired as with CRT-based monitors (even at 85 Hz refresh rate for CRT).
Controls
The controls are quite easy to use and there are “auto” settings everywhere. The controls are buttons, which I like better than joysticks and rotary knobs on some monitors.
Looks
The monitor looks cool (I have a black one) and high-tech (which it is). The amount of space it saves on the desk is also impressive – I could barely fit my old 17” CRT monitor before, but now I have an equivalent of 19” CRT monitor that takes less space, consumes less energy and produces no static electricity or radiation.
Bottom Line
If you have money, I highly recommend this model. I am not sure if I would spend more than $1,000 for it (and happy I got it for $420), but it’s a great piece of equipment that looks cool, reduces the health damage caused by computer use and saves space and energy.
