| jeffs320's Full Review: Sony ES Series Model 200 17 inch CRT Monitor |
I recently finished building another computer and didn't even think about the monitor until after it was all put together. As a side note, I usually recommend buying a pre-manufacturered computer at first and then upgrading all the parts one at a time until you have a complete system put together...that seems to work for me, anyway, when I want another computer for my Network.
So, since I work for Sony Electronics, I decided to see what kind of employee price I could get on a monitor. So I checked the Employee store and got a really sweet deal on the CPD200ES.
The first thing I must point out about Sony Monitors is that they all use the Trinitron Technology, so the screens are virtually flat (if they said it IS flat, then someone would get out a straight edge and sue for false advertising, but for all intensive purposes the screen is flat). They do this by throwing out the Shadow Mask technology used by most manufacturers in which the light is shot through a piece of metal that has holes in it and the edges of the image are kind of blurred together. Using the Shadow Mask Technology, the picture is not as sharp due to the blurring of the edges.
I can't remember right off the top of my head what the technical term for the Trinitron way of projecting the image is, but basically there is a sheet of metal that is cut into very fine vertical strips, and this is when the color guns shoot the light through, therefore giving a crisper picture. The only problem with this is that if you look very carefully on a light colored background you can see that there are tiny grey lines about 1/3 of the way from the top and 1/3 of the way from the bottom of the screen. These are the Damper Wires that keep the grill from vibrating and distorting the picture.
As far as monitors go, this one has an extremely crisp picture for the price. Are there more expensive and better quality monitors? Yes. But If you are looking for a high quality 17" monitor that is a decent price, then this is where to look.
