| Thomcat_V's Full Review: Sony CPD-E210 17 inch CRT Monitor |
Note: This is a review of the Sony E200 which is equivalent to the E210 but with a shorter one year warranty versus the longer three year warranty for the E210.
Recently bought this model for my brother. I personally use an NEC FE700 flat screen monitor. This is also a FD Trinitron-type tube as it also has the two horizontal tension wires. As such, I will offer comparisons between the two models where helpful.
The Sony is EXTREMELY sharp. I thought the NEC was SHARP, but the Sony is significantly sharper. Focus is so good that I can see scan lines at 1280x1024 from a foot away. This is extremely good for a consumer level monitor. It can do up to 1600x1200 resolutions. However, I found 1152x864 to be the best resolution for this size monitor (17"). I say this even though it was still sharp enough for use at 1280x1024, but I found the icons and fonts to be too small and readjusting their size too much of a chore in Windows.
The two main weaknesses of the monitor is it's bulk and clumsy user interface. It is significantly deeper and heavier than my NEC. The other complaint is the user interface to control the various settings. I forget if it consisted of one or two gamepad-like toggles situated under the bezel at a 90-degree angle to the screen. Needless to say it is very hard to accurately adjust the monitor with such an idiotic interface. At least when the settings are done and saved you won't have to bother with it again, but the experience of adjusting multiple screen resolution/refresh rate settings was a complete pain-in-the-derriere. You'll know what I'm talking about if you own one or try one out.
In conclusion, this is a great monitor if you have the money and room for it.
