d_chaloupov's Full Review: Logitech Cordless Wheel (911522-0403) Mouse
Logitech Cordless Wheel Mouse comes in two parts: mouse (ergonomically shaped, has a scrolling wheel that doubles as a 3rd button) and receiver (small gray box with a cord and a "Connect" button) that plugs into one of your COM ports or into PS/2 port. The mouse has standard "ball" mechanics, and is relatively easy to clean (I use a toothpick for that). Top cover of the mouse slides open to show a space for two AAA batteries (mouse will not function without them). The receiver part does not need batteries, and works off the little power supplied through COM or PS/2 port. The box also contains a floppy disk with "Mouseware" software, and a User Manual. "Mouseware" allows you to configure the Mouse, watch the batteries charge level, and also gives you the ability to reprogram mouse buttons and wheel to control your browser and some of Windows Menus.
I found "Mouseware" to be a heavy memory hog, and it stays resident all the time, which is not very convenient. So instead I've switched to the default Logitech Wheel Mouse driver that comes with Windows 98SE, and it works perfectly: I still have the ability to scroll the pages in all browsers, and most text editors and viewers (Outlook Express and Word, to name a few).
Logitech Cordless Wheel Mouse is just a tad heavier (because of the batteries) than a standard, cord-equipped Microsoft mouse, but its no big deal. I used the LCWM for games, heavy graphics editing, browsing, and it did everything perfectly. The only big con to this mouse is that it needs an "Off" switch, so that the batteries do not waste energy while you are away (you can just open the mouse cover and pull the batteries out, but its not very convenient to do that every time). Also I've found the average battery life when used in this mouse 24/7 to be about 3 month, which is not so great (in most remote controls batteries last much longer).
Having no mouse cord to limit your movements, and since its IMHO always the first thing that breaks in normal mice (because of the constant bending strain) is a terrific experience, and also it allows you to use the Logitech Cordless Wheel Mouse as a "Remote control" for your programs, and especially for games. You can be sitting on a couch in 3-4 meters from your computer, and still the mouse will work (provided you are in the line of sight with the "receiver" part) to change the volume on running WinAmp for example (just imagine the possibilities!).
