| PcDr's Full Review: Logitech Marble Mouse (904360-0215) Trackball |
Ever chase a mouse across your desk and tangle the cord? This product is for you. Actually any track ball will eliminate those problems, but the Logitech Marble Mouse is very good execution of the product type. Having tried several examples including the strange thumb controled balls, I have found this one to be the best tieing with the Kensington trackball for top honors.
Overview:
It sets up very easy. It will directly replace your ps2 mouse and has an adapter for a 9pin serial port. Windows will easily recognize it and it is very easy to use.
Ease of use:
The layout of the Marble is very effective at allowing you to rest your hand and fingers on the device without accidently activating the buttons. The ball has sufficient resistence to keep the cursor from flying around uncontrollably, and the buttons are well placed for either right or left handers. The ball falls right under the index finger and middle finger which in my opinion are the easiest to use to control a trak ball, but can be used by any digit even the thumb if that is your thing. The main or "left click" button falls right under thumb far enough below to not be accidently activated yet close enough for easy use. The shape of the base allows your hand to rest on it without having your wrist at an odd angle thus avoiding extra stress while using it. It is even very easy for a child to use, especially makes double clicking easy because the button can be clicked without touching the ball and thus moving the cursor between clicks.
Maintenance:
Couldn't be easier, this is an optical device. Instead of rollers that the ball pushes around, the ball is covered with tiny dots that are read by a sensor as the ball is moved. There is nothing to clog with dirt and stop working. When it does need a dusting, just pick the ball up, it pulls right out no screws or snap rings, and blow the dust out and put the ball back. It takes longer to read about it than to do it.
Caveats:
This is a highly accelerated mousing device and may need to be set to a slower speed in Windows control panel. In some DOS program, if you use any, cursor acceleration is very high and may not be adjustable.
Summary:
Very easy and simple replacement for mice, and the price is very reasonable and I have found it for as low as $29.00.
