This article addresses : EXACTLY why the Logitech Marble 2 is Not for Gamers, HOW MUCH you should expect to pay, and ALL the tips and details that will make or break your purchase satisfaction.
First this first. I love logitech. They came out with optical mice (the Marble 1) about six years ago and it still serves me well... how many pointing devices can you say that about? Of course, the neither the marble 1 or marble 2 are really "mice"... they are more like miniturized trackballs. The ball itself is a glazed red thing covered with tiny spots. The laser inside the "mouse" tracks the movement of the dots, their speed, and direction - then translates that into pointer movement. As a result, the marble "mice" are much more accurate than regular mice. And because they don't roll across your desk picking up gunk, they don't get as dirty. I only clean mine out every six months or so, and then it's good as new.
Now, personally, I'm a hard core gamer. I was a DOOM II champion and I've never been able to lay off of playing first person shooters since. The Marble 1 was great.. my thumb was much more accurate than my whole arm. However, the Marble 2 is not very good for my gaming purposes. I quickly found that aiming was darn near impossible... and that wrestling with that ball took more effort than talking to a Jawa (star wars humor...).
The marble 2 is definitely not for gamers.
However, it does do everything else very well... it's smooth, it's sturdy, and it's very accurate. So I gave it to my girlfriend, who's an art major... and she loves it!
I paid about 55$ for this mouse at Fry's Electronics.
