Jannie0's Full Review: Microsoft Intelli Optical (D58-00026) Mouse
After owning and using a stationary trackball for seven years, I purchased the Microsoft IntelliMouse due to using an optical sensor which utilizes optical technology Microsoft named IntelliEye.
I’ve always disliked the moving ball-type pointing devices which operates by rolling on a mouse pad. I couldn't get accustomed to the moving and pointing inaccuracies associated with them. That’s the sole reason I chose the trackball. There’s one major flaw with the trackball; the ball located on the top on the mouse would collect dirt, dust, grime and get oily build-up from fingers. I constantly disassembled the trackball to clean it, until finally one of the directional springs became inoperable.
The Microsoft IntelliMouse doesn’t use movable parts, therefore, no need for cleaning.
The reasons I chose the IntelliMouse :
System Requirements
29 MB available hard-disk space required, (which is less than some pointing devices available), included is the IntelliPoint 3.1 software on CD-ROM to install setup and the customizable programming. It’s compatible with Windows ‘95, Windows ‘98, Windows 2000, NT Workstation 4.0 with Service Pack 3.0 or later, and also Mac OS 8.5.1 or later operating systems.
How It Works
The Microsoft IntelliMouse has IntelliEye and designed with an optical sensor on the bottom of the mouse which eliminates the use of movable parts, therefore, no need to clean as mentioned earlier.
Features And Functions
Since the IntelliMouse is designed with an optical sensor, there’s no need to use a mouse pad and the sensor gives the mouse accurate, precise and smooth movement.
IntelliMouse is designed for right or left-handed and large or small hands and supports the shape of your hand which is comfortable to use.
IntelliMouse has red light illuminating from the bottom and rear of the mouse making it easy to see in the dark.
The optical eye sensor tracks movement 1,500 times per seconds for smooth and accurate use and is sealed which eliminates accumulation of dirt and dust, thus, no cleaning necessary.
IntelliMouse operates on most common surfaces; except glass or glossy surfaces where the sensor can see it’s reflection.
Page back and page forward; Left and right buttons have the capability to page back or forward which eliminates using the toolbar functions if desired.
Center wheel scrolling; A center wheel for scrolling the page up or down which eliminates the need to use the side scroll bar and can be pressed like a button to scroll by moving the mouse if desired.
Programmable buttons; Easy to program buttons to operate routine tasks or customize buttons for favorite software programs. This feature offers Internet browsing without the need to use the keyboard and toolbars.
Selectable cursor; A variety of cursors to choose from including animated.
Warranty
5 year limited hardware warranty and Microsoft 30-day money back guarantee.
The IntelliMouse has solved all my mouse problems with it's optical sensor design and no moving parts to clean. The feature of the Internet navigation buttons and the scrolling wheel’s function are my favorite features. The only draw back for me was learning to use a different shaped mouse and different program buttons than the trackball I was used to for so many years. The IntelliMouse was easy and fast to get use to and offers more features than I previously had. I wouldn't trade the IntelliMouse for any other mouse now.
I recommend the Microsoft IntelliMouse to anyone wanting a accurate, easy to use and maintenance free mouse. Especially for people like me, that don’t have a keyboard with the features and functions the IntelliMouse offers.

Note 1/3/01--I'm still having difficulty becoming use to moving the mouse to point opposed to the stationary trackball. This could pose as a problem for other's who are habitually use to the trackball as well.
April 2001-I took the IntelliMouse back and got a refund of my money. I'm so glad I did! I reinstalled my old Logitec TrackBall! I couldn't stand the mouse movement across my desk any longer! I am a Trackball-Stationary Mouse person all the way! And I will not change or be at the mercy of a darn moving mouse! For those people that have never used a trackball-I feel sorry for you, as you are doomed to move your stupid little mouse all over the place in futile efforts! Give a trackball a try first--you won't be disappointed! MicroSoft IntelliMouse really sucks! A waste of money and effort on your poor wrist! I ended up hating it! (The only two things I liked was the no maintenance feature and the page scrolling feature-that's all!)
