secondmidnite's Full Review: Microsoft Intelli Optical (D58-00026) Mouse
This is the magic mouse. It works anywhere you put it. It has control beyond anything else mankind has ever seen. This mouse has made my work that much easier for me to finish. Since I've started using it, I've increased my productivity significantly.
profound upgrade
There are only a few peripherals that have really changed how I use computers. The first was the intellimouse - that stupid little wheel changed the world (or at least windows). The second was the natural keyboard. Lovely - can't use anything else. Now comes Microsoft's incarnation to the Optical mouse - the intellimouse optical. What makes this mouse so great is that (a) it's optical so I can use it anywhere and on any computer and (b) it is full configurable.
utility
The best part of this mouse, by far, it its ability to be configured in any way that you need. The extra two buttons, then, become excellent time-savers. The mouse itself is plug-and-play. But if you want to configure it, you just install the drivers and that's it. You can easily change your configurations. In this case, you can program any of the buttons to act as other keys - F3, F8 or whatever.
I spend most of my time at work on SAP and on the web. So I programmed my 2nd left button to be the "back" button for Internet Explorer. This is excellent because it saves me a lot of time navigating through the web instead of having to fish around my screen. I have my screen on a high resolution so I can see multiple documents at the same time - so fishing takes up more time and coordination.
I use the second right button to be "F3". This is the "back" button in SAP and save a LOT of time sifting through the different configuration screens for which I am responsible. This feature alone probably cut my SAP time down by 10 or 15%. It's so much faster than using the mouse - and our installation of SAP is known for being SLOW.
I can only imagine how other people use these keys to make their life easier:
- Cut & paste (Ctrl-C; Ctrl-V)
- Undo / Redo (Ctrl-X; Ctrl-Y)
- F8 (Execute on SAP)
What else? Video games, specialized software (compilers). The uses are multiple.
pricey
The big downside for this mouse is that it costs $55. That might be a lot if you're not going to take advantage of the extra functionality. But if you're a business user or a graphic designer, you can really benefit from this mouse. Just the optical features alone are great for travellers or people with messy desks who can't spare mouse-pad space.
just a mouse
But in the end, this is just the same old mouse. Just point-and-click. Nothing less. But it's extra features makes a lot of impact on how you work. The optical feature is going to be (or already is?) the new standard for this equipment. The extra keys and programmability can be used to streamline your work.
