csmith75's Full Review: Microsoft Intelli Optical (D58-00026) Mouse
Earlier this year, we purchased a Dell Dimension 4500 Desktop. It came with a standard mouse, a MS Intellimouse. Unfortunately, we didn't think to upgrade the mouse, even though we had previously painstakingly picked out a Logitech wireless optical mouse for our other computer last year. After using this mouse for a month, I couldn't take it anymore. It was constantly sticking and it felt cheap. After constantly complaining to my boyfriend and pointing out to him everytime it got stuck, we took a trip to Best Buy.
Appearance and Feel
After repeatedly feeling up various mice in Best Buy, I decided on the Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical. It fit comfortably in my hand and my fingers were aligned with the left and right side buttons. I liked the way the buttons clicked and it didn't look or feel cheap. It is off-white with grey side buttons and a grey scroll wheel. It also has a glowing red LED on the bottom that will surely mesmerize small children and even some adults!
Features
1. IntelliEye Optical Technology - This mouse has the "most powerful optical technology in the world". What does this mean? It means that contrary to mice with mouse balls, it has more precision, is faster, and can be used on many more surfaces. You do not have to use a mouse pad with this mouse and you don't have to worry about cleaning like traditional mice. There is no dirt to clean and there is not sticking to worry about.
2. Scroll wheel - This wheel is convenient because it lessens the movements that you have to make. Instead of moving the mouse to the side of the screen to move up and down the scroll bar, you just move the scroll wheel in the direction you want it to go.
3. Five programmable buttons - this is my favorite feature of this mouse. You have your standard right and left buttons. There's also the wheel button. You then have right and left side buttons that can be programmed to perform commands. I have my left side button act as my back button and the right side button as my forward button. Instead of using the back and forward button on my browser, I just press these buttons. This is very convenient and makes my surfing a lot easier.
4. Right and Left Hand Use - this mouse can be used by either left handed or right handed individuals. It is styled so that either person will feel comfortable using this mouse.
What I don't Like
The only problem that I have with this mouse is that the scroll wheel offers too much resistance. I like for the scroll wheel to scroll easily. As a result, I take advantage of the wheel button. When this is pressed, an onscreen scroll option is displayed and you can just scroll by moving the mouse.
Installation
This mouse comes with a CD containing the Intellipoint software. You need to have one of the following operating systems:
Microsoft Windows 95
Microsoft Windows 98
Windows Millennium Edition
Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 5 or later
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Macintosh OS 8.6 or later
You will need 25MB of available hard disk space for Windows and 15MB for Macintosh.
You will also need a USB port (for Macs) or a USB port or PS/2 compatible (for PCs).
Conclusion
I am very satisfied with this mouse and its performance. I could have gotten it cheaper off of the Internet but I wanted it immediately. The extra money that I paid was worth it.
