| spishak's Full Review: Acer TravelMate 340T PC Notebook |
The 340T is a very good, slim, feature packed notebook.
However, I have encounter a few problems with it. I've had it for over a year now and I consider myself a fairly heavy user.
There is no point in me describing all the good things about this computer, since they are written in the other reviews and for the most part I agree with them. More importantly to prospective buyers are the problems associated with the computer. I've had my 340T for about a year and a half now, so I think I am in a position to comment on it's flaws.
First of all, I have one pixel that is permanently red. It doesn't bother me too much, but still I'd rather not have it there.
The harddrive is very loud in comparison to other notebooks. When I first looked at it in the stores, I couldn't here at all, but when I used it at home and the computer sits on a hard surface and in a small room, it can be quite loud.
The keyboard makes noises. After about 8 months of use, the keys started to rattle the keyboard everytime I hit the certain keys. What happened was the keyboard was not sitting firmly in place. I had to jam plastic pieces into the keyboard tabs to keep the keyboard down properly. Don't get me wrong, the keyboard itself is good and the feel is not bad, it is just rather annoying to have your keyboard clicking.
Also, the letter "K" on my keyboard looks like it is about to stop woring. .. dammit!!!!!
I've only had one major crash, which occured recently, while using MS Word. The HD went nuts on me and I almost had to format it to recover.
Here is a big point that I really hate about this computer. The hot keys don't always work for me. Sometime when I use the modem or are am doing something else that uses other hardware, the sleep function does not work. I will press it and the computer will initiate the sleep function then hang. My friend also has an Acer notebook and this happens to her as well. Acer, if you are listening, fix this damn problem. It is an important feature that I regret not being able to use. It pisses me off to have to wait forever to start-up when I need to use the computer at that moment.
Overview:
The 340T is a very good notebook and I do not regret purchasing it. In fact I actually love this notebook as it is slim in fast and looks pretty cool (at least it did at the time I bought it). It is also pretty much the best value for your buck. At the time, I could not find a comparable notebook that even came close to this price.
However, it is relatively loud and the sleep function is unreliable to the point of being useless. Because of these faults my next notebook purchase will not be from Acer.
Trust is an important factor as there is important work stored on my computer. If I have to worry that everytime I am going to sleep my computer, it will hang (forcing me to reboot) I would rather pay a few hundred bux more to by an IBM or Toshiba
