I have been looking to purchase a computer for the last couple of months. I did a lot of research and was deciding whether I should go with the desktop or laptop computer. There is pros and cons to each type of computer. I needed the computer for college and so I was trying to buy a good computer that was affordable. Compaq, Dell, Gateway, and Mac's were the types I was looking at. At first I was leaning toward getting a Dell desktop and was about to order one, and then I changed my mind. I wanted a laptop! Laptops have their own strengths and weaknesses, and price being the main weakness. I looked at all different types of laptops and came to a decision that I was going to get an ibook, which is a Macintosh computer. I called to order the computer which cost about $1549. When I was talking to the guy he told me that I should get a Powerbook, because for a back to school offer they were selling for $1999. He said the Powerbook does circles around the ibook. So I decided to spend the extra four hundred dollars to get the powerbook. Plus it comes in a color I like, black, instead of the ugly tangerine and blueberry colors in which the ibook offers.
So what does the computer have?
*400 mhz with PowerPC G3 processor...this doesn't sound like a lot but it is very fast. I'm not sure about the difference between the processors. I know that some desktops have like 700 mhz but I think the G3 powerPc makes this computer fast,
*1MB backside L2 Cache...the guy I talked to on the phone at apple, told me that this makes a huge difference.
*64 MB of SDRAM it supports up to 512 MB
*14.1 in screen...this is an awesome screen, and very big for a laptop, most ones that I looked at were about 12 inches.
*6 GB of hard disk space
*Removable DVD rom drive...I'm very excited to watch a DVD on this thing, I've heard from other people that it is pretty cool.
*Lithium-ion battery that lasts about 5 hours.
*Built in ethernet card...this is very important because the college that I'm going to this year requires this card. So I wanted to get a computer that had this already built in.
*Built in 56K modem...it also comes with a month free of internet access from Earthlink. I'm using that right now until I get my Ethernet set up at my college.
*Preinstalled Mac OS software...this allows you to go on the internet as soon as you get the computer. It doesn't have any word processing software already installed. So you are probably going to have to buy that.
*Dimensions and weight: 12.7 by 10.4 by 1.7 inches, 6.1 pounds with battery and DVD-Rom drive.
This computer is worth the money, when I first got it I was very impressed with color and graphics. Very clear and concise. You can do pretty much everything with this computer. It's great for presentations, if you are someone who has to do those a lot. You can connect the computer up to a TV and give a presentation that way. I think that's pretty cool. I would recommend you get this computer instead of the ibook right now. Especially when it's only at $1999. It's a great price for a great computer. You will have to buy some additional software to get everything you want, but it's like that with most computers. It's a very good buy and has already paid dividends for me. I'm hoping that this will be the best investment I've made in my life so far! I think it will!
