We can't be the only family that doesn't buy the first generation of a new product. We always wait till the work out the inevitable problems the first set of users discover, and that's always worked for us.
This time, however, my husband couldn't wait. He HAD to have the new Titanium PB and RIGHT NOW.
The first one we received, fresh off the truck and probably one of the first shipment ever released, had its share of problems.
The speakers failed within a week. The battery kept dropping out unexpectedly. The CD/DVD drive was painfully noisy. And the keyboard just wasn't right. Loose. Clicky.
Sent back to Apple for warranty service for the above items, we waited nearly 3 weeks to have it returned. We'd expected it to be gone for a week, tops.
And when it was returned to us, the keyboard was missing a few screws, the CD/DVD drive wouldn't release the first disc we put into it and my husband began to turn purple.
The 2nd call to Apple, however, produced this result: they sent us a brand new PB. No yelling on our part. Just responsive customer service who knew when they'd got a lemon out there and wanted to make it right.
After all, we've been loyal Apple/Mac users since 1984.
Anyway, what's most interesting is this: many of the design flaws and problems in the very first PB have been corrected already in this model. It's the same release version, but they've already tweaked it to make it better. An awkward power plug was redesigned. The keyboard fits better and clicks more comfortably under our fingers. The CD/DVD is silent.
It's all better. Apple certainly is responsive and once again, our faith in the company is restored.
I won't rehash the technical specs with you. You know this is one hell of a computer. Be warned, however, that the screen is mind-bogglingly big and rather wonderful. And with an additional cable, we can now watch DVDs on our TV. Which my husband adores.
So there you have it. Buy Apple. Buy anything Apple. They'll take care of you.
