| jasondudley's Full Review: Apple PowerBook G4 15.2 in. (M8362LL/A) Mac Notebo... |
The Specs
-550 MHZ PowerPC G4
-20 GB 4200 RPM hard drive
-256 MB PC100 SD-RAM
-15.2" Wide Format Screen
-DVD Drive
The Processor and Memory
The 550 MHZ PowerPC G4 processor is plenty of speed for my uses. I have edited video, rendered large images, compiled HTML, written documents, and, of course, surfed the web and read my email. None of this has ever lagged on me and I really do feel like it is comparable in overall speed to a GHZ Pentium machine (I know... I know... don't start with that). Photoshop is great on it and so is Final Cut Pro. The model technically came with 128 megabytes of RAM but Apple has been running a "Double the RAM" offer so it came with 256 MB of RAM. Installation of RAM is easy; all you do is pop out the keyboard and slip it in. It has two slots, so you won't have to pull out the first and replace it with a new one.
Hard Drive
The 20 GB hard drive is sufficient for my uses and the speed is good for a portable hard drive. It's also very quite.
DVD
This drive is great, the slot-loading aspect makes it easier and quicker to load. DVD playback is also very good quality and the audio is synced perfectly.
The Screen
The screen is probably the most remarkable part of the laptop: It is the height of a 14.1" screen (so the laptop is not deeper overall) but much wider. It is very crisp and bright and movies play in wide screen format without putting those black bars on the screen.
Overall Casing
The Titanium is strong, great looking, and very thin. The black keyboard is slightly springy and great for long reports. The trackpad is accurate and easy to get used to. The glowing Apple logo on the back of the screen adds a nice touch as well.
Out of the Box
When I first opened this up on Christmas day, I was greeted by the computer itself, the power adapter, an s-video to RCA adapter, a power cord, and the manuals (which I never did find necessary). The power adapter is very well designed, it is a white square with rounded corners that has a cord to attach to the computer and two pop-out pieces that you can wrap the cord around. One corner is detachable and you can plug in either a cord to plug into the outlet or two fold out prongs to attach directly to the outlet. It worked perfectly, the battery was even charged.
Yes, I love this computer. With Apple's Airport Wireless Internet, I am sitting on the couch typing this review. I simply have not found one down side to this computer, other than the fact that I do use it too much.
