| LemonDork's Full Review: Apple iBook Key Lime Special Edition 12.1 in. (M82... |
(Last Updated: 8/15--at bottom) As soon as I saw the delicious looking iBooks on television I had to have one. I've been on a Mac for about 9 years now, and even though I had not purchased an iMac (I wasn't ready to buy new USB compatible printers and tablets and external drives too) I was eager to buy an "iMac to go" as the advertise reads, becasue I needed a laptop and these promised to be the cheapest, most efficient, CUTEST Macs on the market.
With a speedy G3 processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM, a 12 inch screen, a light that goes on when the computer sleeps, internal 56k modem, sound output, trackpad, a nifty handle, CD Rom drive, a power adaptor with a sleek shape, USB, modem and LAN ports, this computer has exquisite features and a stylish look to go! This product should be considered based on looks alone. The screen has sharp colors and resolution with outstanding brightness and clarity. The keys are easy to press, meaning they don't stick, and they feel smoothe on my fingertips (Yes, yes, it matters to me!) The caps lock and num lock buttons light up when in locked mode. The track pad DOES take a bit of practice, but like anything, anyone could master it...I can do it both with my right and left index fingers.
The computer comes with one LAN port (For setting up and using a network, connecting to a Cable Modem) and one USB port (to attatch a printer, a mouse, a USB to multi USB port extention). It also contains an extention for speakers or headphones. The iBook also comes with a power adaptor with an interesting yo-yo-esque cord, meaning that the extension cord rolls up into this pretty looking spaceship-like disc for easy space conservation. The iBook only needs a two prong outlet to charge, and the iBook manual claims that 6 hours can be gotten out of one charge. I have not had a chance to try that out yet, though. The CD rom drive is well concealed and easy to operate (much like any CD Rom drive for the matter).
The iBook also comes with a plastic-encased steel handle for carrying, although I prefer to carry it in my Made-for-my-Mac carrying case.
My absolute favorite part of the iBook is it's shell. The iBook is beautiful. It's got a rounded shape with a great balance between the tangerine and white plastics--and each part of the iBook has a wonderful, differerent texture. It's absolutely cute--a work of art--in fact, when it's not in use (RARELY), it's so fun to look at. Just take a look at the iBook. You'll fall in love.
The iBook is ideal for anyone who is willing to admit that the MacOS is far more superior than that of Windows. Most of my (immature) friends have criticized and mocked my iBook, along with my several other Macintosh products. However, I have a laptop, and THEY don't! And I am far more capable than any of them can ever be on the computer, as far as the internet goes, as far as graphic design goes, as far as style goes (when it comes down to me and my Mac). This computer is ideal for anyone willing to understand how great and amazing Macintosh products, and Macs alike are. It's an easy to learn and a proficient OS, and this iBook is an outstanding piece of hardware as well. However, nobody I know is appreciative of the iBook. So they simply don't deserve it.
***UPDATE: I recently had trouble with my round yo-yo charger type thing. It had to be toggled with in the port to get it to charge, and was quick to not stay in properly, therefore, not charging. It also sparked once, so I called cusomer service, which was a tangled web of calling several 800 numbers, pressing several touchtone keys, and then listening to that song from the new iMac Snow commercials (but I like that song) However, my operator, Stan was comprehensive, quick, friendly, useful. It may sound like a bad generalization, but he is the model operator. EVERY operator should be this friendly! I wish there was some way I can call Apple and tell them of this guy so he could get a promotion or something; that's how great he was. I will be recieving a new charger this Friday, and I was instructed to return my old, not working one. Here's a tip though. The charger isn't designed especially well, although it's a great idea, it wasn't reinforced, and executed to the highest of it's potential. Therefore, try to be really careful with it so you don't tear anything. If the iBook is fully charged and you have it on your lap, and you're constantly fidgeting, it'd be wise to leave it unplugged. The iBook has a great battery, and charges fairly quickly. But if there is a problem, just call Apple, and the problem will be solved!
