| Jag1820's Full Review: Apple iBook Key Lime Special Edition 12.1 in. (M82... |
I was sorry and surprised to read some postings re. problems with Tech Support. I ordered a 466Mhz Graphite iBook SE from Club Mac. I bumped the RAM up by 128MB for 192MB total. When it arrived, the hard drive was WAY too noisy -- there was definitely something wrong with it. Club Mac referred me to Apple Tech Support. After some troubleshooting by phone, Tech Support said they would have to replace my iBook. At 9:30 the next morning, FedEx arrived with a brand new, sealed iBook, and a return label to ship the defective unit back to Apple. I couldn't believe how quickly Apple jumped to right this wrong -- I was impressed and grateful.
As for the iBook, it is really a joy to use. I had and sold a 500Mhz Pismo PowerBook, not because I wanted to, but because it was really a luxury I couldn't afford. The iBook is a much less expensive solution, and with the addition of faster processors, larger hard drives, DVD, and Firewire, the iBook is finally close enough to the PowerBook to make it a viable option. Right now I run Office 2001, Freeway 3, Adobe FrameMaker 6, and CorelDraw 8 on my iBook, and everything works perfectly. I perceive only a very slight performance hit when opening images in PhotoPaint 8. Otherwise, the iBook is fast, fast, fast!
One minor gripe -- the resolution is only 800x600 -- these days, that's not much, especially after being used to the much higher display resolution on the Powerbook. Still, the iBook display is bright and crisp, making exceptional use of the 8MB video RAM. I also think the keyboard is actually better than the one on the Pismo, which I never cared for. The exterior is also super-tough, with an enhanced, shiny appearance that differs from prior iBook models. I've heard this referred to as the "snow" look, but whatever you call it, the iBook is attractive enough that I'm not embarassed to be seen with it (at least in graphite -- the key lime and indigo models don't do much for me).
All in all, A++ for Apple Tech Support, and for the new, wonderful iBook -- it's a fantastic machine that does everything I need it to do!
