| sidjda's Full Review: Apple iBook Key Lime Special Edition 12.1 in. (M82... |
Apple Computer had me when they redesigned the iBook case. The White case reminded me of the Beatles' "White Album" which was so refreshing when
it came out (this is dating me)in the late 60's. Right out
the box Apple's packaging is a thing of beauty.
The new case design has made the iBook into what I consider an acceptable computer for business use. When I saw the early ads I was sold on it.
I bought my first Apple back in 1982, an Apple II+. I still
use an Apple IIE with the original Appleworks so I'm
a bit of a "stick in the mud". I have also owned an Apple IIc, Mac Plus,Classic,Performa 550 (still waiting for my
rebate check...)Powerbase with G3 upgrade and Macintosh G4 Cube. The point of this is I am pretty much sold on Apple. I also own some Apple stock but that does not affect how I feel about the new iBook.
I purchased the iBook from Unitek Computer in Santa
Monica. This is one of the few Apple dealers to currently
have the iBook in-stock besides the new Apple store in
the Glendale Galleria which I also visited. I also purchased my G4 Cube back in November of last year.
Unitek included an extra 128k of memory for an additional $30.00 with the iBook and did not charge sales tax, however they raised the cost of the computer
by about $80.00 to make up for the difference. One thing you learn early is that nobody gives anything away
for nothing! I was so hot to buy the new iBook they could
have sold it to me for a premium. There is nothing like
the high one gets from a new hardware purchase, especially this one. Anyway back to the nitty-gritty.
I decided that my main use for this computer would be
the Internet using Apples' Airport System. I installed the new Airport card and it works like a charm! I bought the iBook with a Cd-rom drive to keep my cost down. I have
two DVD players at home and didn't feel the need to
have this capability on my laptop. I also am not into
recording music so the Cd-rw drive did not grab me.
I can always buy a separate Cd-rw an then I can use it with either my iBook or G4 Cube. I know that this may be more information than you need but it might help
you decide to do what I did. If I wanted a G4 Powerbook
for the $3,000 or so asking price I would have bought
one a long time ago! The point is to get what you need
and keep the cost down. My only problem with the iBook
so far is the keyboard which appears to be the same as
the original iBook's. Sound from the iBook's speakers
is pretty good for their size. I like the screen clarity and
readability of the iBook. I'm still getting used to the touchpad and "clicker" device and may opt for a trackball or wireless optical mouse in the future. One
thing I definitely feel I need now is a Kensington USB
Laptop Light. My eyes are getting a work out writing this review. The new iBook weighs only a couple of ounces
less than a Powerbook G4 around Five pounds. The White case is great but will be dificult to keep from
getting scratched due to normal wear and tear. It does
look good. Overall, I have to give Steve Jobs (We share the same initials-S.J.) credit for another masterpiece.
Keep up the good work. I also understand that I will be
receiving the new System X at no-charge. I hope that
doesn't go the way of the Performa 550 rebate!
