| Sunriselady's Full Review: Compaq Presario 1200XL110 (155727-003) PC Notebook |
I purchased this computer in March of 2000 and so far (up to July) I've been very happy with its portability and features. The screen is fabulous; there's no comparison between mine and the screens of some of my dormmates' laptops. This screen (12.1") isn't too small for me, even though I was told by several friends to go for something bigger. Sound quality is great, although when typing my wrists tend to block some sound from the speakers.
The 6.0GB stated hard drive size is misleading if, like me, you aren't used to getting partitioned drives where a large chunk of memory is used for backup. I'm not sure if this was done by Compaq or by the retailer who installed some of the computer's features, but please be aware of this possibility. About 4.24GB are allotted to the C: drive and the rest is locked up in D: as a system save.
The computer does tend to get a little warm on the bottom and sometimes the fans labor to keep it from overheating. I've found it necessary to use a large hardcover book between my lap and the computer, or else the tops of my legs get awfully warm.
A friend recommended that I avoid Compaq because they can be crash-prone, although I imagine that's more a Windows issue than a hardware manufacturer issue. I will admit that for the first month or so I was getting the "blue screen of death" almost every day. Due to a software problem I had to reinstall Windows last month, and since then the computer's been as docile as a lamb. Just goes to show you that you should take computer advice (including this) with a grain of salt.
Otherwise it is one of my favorite purchases; easy to use, fun to use, and it didn't break the bank.
