Pros: It's a laptop and it's portable.
Cons: Slow, slow, slow. Too much pre-loaded software.
The Bottom Line: If you need a pre-owned laptop, stay away from this model.

| Dustyleesmom's Full Review: Compaq Presario 1245 (146151-167) PC Notebook |
My sister loaned me this laptop because she has MS Access 2000 loaded on it and I wanted to learn about databases. The Compaq Presario 1245 is not something I would buy for myself if I were to buy a laptop. This particular model is no longer manufactured, but several people are trying to sell theirs on ebay as I write this.
From the box and accompanying manuals, the Compaq Presario 1245 comes standard with a AMD K6-2 333 MHZ processor with MMX, a 3.2 GB hard drive, a 12.1 color screen, 32MB ram, a built in 24X CD-ROM 1.44 FDD, a internal 56K Modem, and JBL speakers. It has a PCMCIA Slot, USB port, Serial Parallel port, and a PS/2 port. Windows 98, MS Word, Rand McNally Map Finder, Compaq Support links, and several other software applications come pre-installed.
The laptop takes no less than 3 minutes to boot up due to the pre-installed software. It also has an annoying glitch in it that comes up every couple of hours suggesting that you need to do a disk cleanup. According to Compaq, the disk cleanup window is a glitch with this particular model and no harm will come if you don't do the disk cleanup each time the window pops up.
It can run multiple applications at the same time, but does seem to drag a little the more applications you have open. Saving stuff to the hard drive is fairly slow and to the floppy drive even slower. It's only crashed on me a couple of times and that was when I was trying to use "Juno" to browse the internet.
The Compaq Presario 1245 comes with an AC adapter and Battery. However, the battery no longer charges due to a problem with the voltage converter board (my sister said). After doing some research on this particular model on the internet and Epinions, the voltage converter board problem has been experienced by other Compaq Presario 1245 owners.
For a laptop it's not bad, but I wouldn't recommend that you buy this particular model. The people trying to sell them on Ebay are asking way, way too much -- I, personally, wouldn't pay over $300 for this laptop. You can find newer laptops with processor speeds and hard drive capacity over two to three times what this model has for less than $1000.
