This laptop has served us faithfully for 7 months. However, our experience has not been entirely golden. I'll start with the positives: nice performance with business applications, Internet, and games. Lots of easy-touch buttons for connecting to the internet, adjusting volume, checking mail, etc, which is great for a new computer owner. The active matrix screen has a nice picture and is easy on the eyes. For the previously mentioned reasons, my wife and I have been happy with this laptop's performance.
However, there have been a few bumps in the road. We immediately had a problem with the CDROM. It kept spinning up and down, but was not working correctly. Compaq support claimed it did not work because we deleted the Compaq support programs off the hard drive. These programs have nothing to do with a defective CDROM. Compaq places almost a gigabyte of backup information, support tools, and free programs on the hard drive, which are worthless to an experienced computer user. After some discussion we convinced them to take it back for service. Within 3 days we had a working computer back, BUT they neglected to send a battery and battery cover back! The new battery came 2 weeks later, but it took more than 3 months for us to get the correct battery cover from Compaq. They kept sending us the wrong piece! To correct this situation, they send us a box of dozens of plastic pieces for who knows what! I was able to find a matching cover as a result of this shipment.
I can't comment on the battery life, because I usually have it plugged in somewhere in the house. The built-in modem functions well at 56K.
Bottom Line: I'm sure the price has dropped from the $1699 we paid for it, but it has performed well since our experiences with Compaq. If you are novice user, the buttons and extra software might help you along with basic tasks, but this won't help you learn to use a windows computer, because other computers don't have these buttons, and backup software installed on them. The hard drive size is also severely limited, since almost 1/3 of it was used up by Compaq 'stuff' until I removed it.
