My customized Presario 1600, ordered from Compaq's direct-sales website, arrived with a malfunctioning DVD drive. This is not unusual, I am told. Compaq apparently relies on its customers to find the defective units--and to suffer the inconvenience of replacing them--instead of doing rigorous final inspections at the factory. Far better for the bottom line, obviously. Compaq's customer service facility is staffed by some courteous and competent young people, but they have to live with the company's management policies, which shift the costs of quality control from Compaq to the customer. And after two weeks a replacement unit had still not arrived. So, three weeks and one defective machine after my initial contact with the company, I cancelled my order.

MY bottom line? ANYTHING but Compaq.
