I was dumb enough to get caught up in the notebook thing and bought one my last year in grad school. They are nice to have when you need a portable computer.

I chose the Compaq and I am really sorry I did. I found the 1600 series to be slow, very unresponsive, and was a trouble for the very start.

After just a few weeks the hard drive failed and I had to get a replacement. Then the replacement had problems with the keyboard connector staying properly seated. The letters in the keyboard also started to wear off and looked really trashy. Then keys started to stick and the keyboard had to be replaced.

The video quality was fair....but not good, and game play was out of the question.

I could never recommend a Compaq to anybody now. I paid over $2,600 for mine and was glad to sell it off and get rid of a problem that would only get worse in the future.
