| KSpringer999's Full Review: Compaq Presario 1685 (112199-003) PC Notebook |
The Compaq Presario 1685 is in two words-- a NIGHTMARE. Before purchasing one of these treacherous machines, read my article and the HELL I've been through with my 8-month-old Compaq.
I received my laptop as a birthday present from my husband and let me tell you, I was thrilled! The screen was beautiful, it was fast, and so convenient to use. That was the first week anyway. Slowly, I started to notice some problems. By the third month of use, the graphic capabilities were shot. Every icon, graphic, whatever was a blur. We downloaded patches from Compaq but nothing would fix this problem. Talk about fun-- try doing a search on eBay when you can't even see the Search button. Using the Internet with my nifty Compaq became a guessing game.
Month 4-- the HELL began. It all started when the little fan in the back of my laptop died. We couldn't have that-- the laptop would burn up. So off to repairs it went. Easy fix right? One would think. After a week of phone calls, we finally found the appropriate Compaq contact to send the laptop to (it's under a one-year warranty afterall). They kept my laptop for approximately 3 weeks (did I mention I use my laptop for business? Talk about wasting my time and putting a dent into working!).
Now with my laptop back and a shiny new fan, I was semi-happy again (that graphic thing still ticked me off though). 2 weeks later- BOOM! The mighty fan breaks again. And off to Compaq repairs the laptop went for a second time. This time they kept it for a month.
Upon my laptop's 2nd return from repairs, I was very excited to get to work. Not 2 minutes into using the laptop, BAM! It amazingly enough broke AGAIN. Now come on Compaq-- what in the world is the problem with your laptop fans??? Of course it didn't end here. I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only was fan number 3 broken, but the service people returned my laptop with the keys loose. Ahh...I'm such a complainer, eh? I mean, who really uses the space bar anyway? With no other choices and the third time being a charm and all, we sent the laptop in for repair number 3.
Well, that was well over 2 months ago. Since then I broke both of my legs (about 3 weeks ago) and I am forced to work from home. Wouldn't it be swell if I had a laptop I could work off of? Sure am glad I'm paying on that $2000 credit card for a laptop I haven't seen in months. You can bet my husband and I spent anywhere from 1-3 hours a night screaming at the Compaq customer service/repair people for the last 3 weeks. Let me save all of you who will undoubtedly have problems with this product some time and let you know now-- the people answering the phone at Compaq lie through their teeth (thank you Scott and Michael-- the top two tale tellers). Amazing enough, they said they just received the product on day 1, 3 days later were working on the product, 3 days later just received it again, 3 days later busily working on it, 3 days later just received the product, etc. etc. Isn't it a wonder how they only have 2 coin phrases? No matter how hard I pleaded (due to my needing to work from home), they would not send me a temporary laptop (such kind, caring souls at Compaq).
So, you are wondering where this stands now I'm sure. The laptop came home for the fourth time yesterday. Guess what? The fan works. BUT, keys are broken (Compaq's fault) so I can't type and they fried the hardware so we can't use it... AT ALL! This time we raised hell with everyone we could contact at Compaq corporate. These people were actually much nicer (we were only hung up on twice). They say they are sending us a replacement product (please let it be a DELL!) since the one we have is the devil.
Moral of the story: If you see a Compaq laptop Presario 1685 in a store, shield your eyes and run like hell in the other direction.
