I bought my 1685 specificaly to bring with me when I travel. I was looking for something fast, yet affordable. When I first bought it, the Cmos had dumped so I had to call Tech support to get a bit of help. Compaq's tech support as GREAT. They talked me through everything I needed and spend about 30 minutes on the phone with me. Worked fine after that. The DVD player is nice but the screen resolution doesn't do it justice. Maybe I just have to tweek it a bit more. But I ran a second monitor off it at the same time and the Regular computer monitor was WAY clearer. That kind of disappointed me a bit. Also found out after a few months that the 4gig hard drive is way too small for what I want the machine to do. I do a lot of online work along with a lot of Game playing to pass the time. With the drive factory partitioned you only have about 2.5 gig to play with on the C: drive... toss a few of your favorite NEWER games on there and its FULL. Recommend a larger hard drive ASAP! The speakers are not well placed either. If you are trying to listen to music while working on the computer, the palms of your hands sit right on the speakers. They aslo dont hold up really long... I need to have mine replaced as soon as I can.
It does however Scream with the newer games on the market. Have not run into any problems running graphics intensive games (EA superbike, Tiberian sun) Unreal runs well but you have to use a bit of lower resolution... overall I would say look around for another computer... I am glad I have it on long trips but wish I would have shopped around a bit more.
