This is a great computer. This purpose was bought for cataloging patient information as well as running graphic intensive clinical pathology programs(I am in medical school). In addition, I also have drafting software installed on it. To begin with, Compaq gives you so much for your money. 400Mega Hertz processor, 6.4 Gigabyte hard drive, 64MB RAM upgradable to 192MB, v90 56k modem, a superior quality 14.1 inch TFT monitor, awesome sound and DVD all for less than $2000. My computer came preinstalled with Quicken and Money 99, Ring Central fax software, Encarta 99, Word 2000 and of course Windows 98 second edition. The computer has one USB port in the back, to which I have an Astra 1220u scanner hooked up. I also have a HP 975 printer and a full size mouse plugged in. The computer easily handles these peripherals and there is essentially no delay of signal to the printer. The scanner works as fast and as efficiently as it does with my much more powerful desktop PC.
I especially like the display. After having 2 laptops with 12.1 inch HPA displays, I am very impressed by the resolution and color of this TFT display. DVD movies play flawlessly, and the graphic intensive medical and architecture programs I have on this computer prove that it was worth the money.
Another great feature is that the fans to cool the chip blow hot air out the back of the machine, not out the bottom like on my husbands laptop(which, by the way, is not a Compaq).
As great as this computer is, I am going to give it to my parents because it does not have TV out capabilities, and I need a computer with either another USB port or infra red. This is a very capable and adequate machine, but I have recently realized that I need to be able to capture video, display power point presentations on various TVs and extensively use an external zip drive. Therefore, I am going to buy a Compaq in the 1890 series with a 10GB hardrive, infra red port,128MB RAM etc, etc...
Lastly, I need to tell you that Compaq customer support is second to none. My DVD drive arrived broken. I spent 30 minutes on the phone at 4am trying to trouble shoot the problem with one of the tech reps, but to no avail. Needless to say, I was upset that my new computer arrived broken. However, within one day, Compaq's friendly rep sent Air Borne express to my house with a box to package the computer up in. The courier waited for me for 15 minutes to package the computer, and 48 hours later, the courier delivered the computer back to me with a new DVD drive. I was so impressed by their professional and timely response to my problem, that I will never buy a laptop from any other company again.
