I purchased this laptop for several reasons. The first being that my previous machine was 2 years outdated, and extremely slow. Needing a new machine, I shopped around before settling on this machine, and I am very pleased that I did.
This machine has many features that most laptops are missing, and Compaq gives these features at a low cost compared to other manufacturers.
The most prominent feature of the machine is its DVD drive. It not only allows you to view multimedia content on DVD based form, but you can also watch DVD movies on this unit. Other manufacturers sell "mini-DVD" players for $1000. For a little bit more, you can have yourself a portable DVD player and a computer in one unit.
In addition to the DVD drive, it also has a built-in 3 1/2" floppy drive. Most machines require either an external floppy drive, or to swap out your floppy for a CD/DVD, but this machine has both built into the case.
The sound system is superb for a laptop, featuring JBL Pro speakers built in, as well as front loading microphone and earphone jacks for easy access. Its so easy to use this machine as an entertainment center on the go.
When you are not using this machine for entertainment, it is also a workhorse for productivity. It gives ample hard drive space, a high amount of memory, and a clear, easy-on-the-eyes screen. The machine can run Word, Excel, Outlook, and any other productivity application with speed and ease.
Getting around on the machine is also easy, as it features a high quality touchpad, easy to access buttons, and a 'scroll-device', a small pad which allows you to scroll up and down in your web browser, word processor, or whatever application you choose. It also features 4 "Quick-Access" buttons for easy to access to applications and web sites that you need easy access to. While it comes preprogrammed with Compaq sites, you can easily reprogram the buttons to any site or program of your choosing.
The keyboard on the machine is light to the touch, and easy on the wrists. It has an area for resting your wrists, to promote proper typing form. The machine also includes an USB port, vital in todays market for adding addition peripherals, as well as your standard Parallel/Serial/PS2 ports. It includes a built in 56k modem, and a PC Card slot for adding a network card, or other PC Card accessory as necessary.
An all around general purpose laptop, this machine is great for a first or second machine, great for students and business travelers, or just anyone looking for a workhorse of a machine that you can enjoy as well.
