To save money, I bought a show room display model. This particular showroom had streams of kids wandering past the computers. The kids do a good job of pounding the display units into dust. This particular machine ran DVDs continuously. I believe it was on display for six months. I was concerned about the substantial wear and tear that the system had in the store, but got the machine for a song.
I am a computer programmer, and have been using the Presario as my primary system. I log several hours of web surfing, writing and computer programming per day. I also watch several DVDs a week. Despite its hard life, this computer has held up exceptionally well. I wish I had more memory as DVDs sometime skip.
I had some difficulties with the energy saving features. On occasion, the computer would not comeback from the energy save mode, and I would have to cold boot the machine to bring it back to life. I turned off the energy saving features, and have not had many problems since doing this.
Of course, having turned off the automatic energy saving features, I've been diligent in manually suspending the computer when I go out. As mentioned in the other ads, the system runs hot, and you have to worry about letting the machine burn out. The system dissipates heat through the base of the unit. Do not place it on an insulated system, like a cloth tablecloth.
Sometimes, the TouchPad mouse sticks. I've had this problem from the beginning (the display room syndrome). The problem has not gotten worse with age. Like all laptops, the keypad is not as easy to use as a stand alone keyboard. When I want to do serious writing, I use an external keyboard. The Presario's keyboard is better than some of the keyboards I've used on other systems. The first laptop manufacturer that designs a decent keyboard will become a billionaire.
The machine I am using has been through a lot in the last two and a half years. I wish I had more memory, but I think I will get another two to three years out of it.
If you have a Presario 1692 and you are having problems with the power down features, you can turn the feature off. You do this by following the procedures in boot up. If you turn off the energy saving features, you will need to be good about suspending the machine on your own.
