Pros: Wonderful portable desktop with good size screen for DVD watching while on the Train.
Cons: Gets a little hot on the underside and built-in speaker audio could be louder.
The Bottom Line: I wish I had it for myself, instead of buying for my wife's graduate studies. Now we need to buy DVD's....

| flashpont's Full Review: Compaq Presario 17XL260 (180381-003) PC Notebook |
Bought this 1700 for my wife's graduate classes from the Compaq Outlet Factory - online. It was listed as refurbished and included MS-WORD 2000 and Windows 98 Second Ed. As a computer tech by day, I already knew of Compaq's good reputation and chose the Presario 1700 as a very good deal even after including an additional 2 year extended service warranty. My wife was thrilled to have it.......... but she hardly uses it, preferring our home Desktop Athalon powered 600 Mhz PC I built for the family a year a go. We seem to still be fighting over who gets to use the desktop machine and forget we have the Laptop now. I expected my wife to be taking it to her classes but it just sits in it's case on the floor next to the desk with the home computer turned on. I starting to get her attention when I bring the laptop to bed and check my email and play DVD's on it. So far no problems and I've loaded MS-Office 2000 Pro, Corel Office 2000, a few games, McAfee Anti-Virus, and AOL 6 with Netscape 6 as well. No crashes, no blue screen of death, no lockups. (Which is more than I can say for my desktop Pentium III 500 at work.) I'll probably be adding another 64MB of DRAM soon and an Ethernet PCMCIA card for attaching to my network at work (Novell). But I don't expect any surprises....... Oh we also tried to make the DVD play thru our S-VHS VCR to our TV set and finally figured it out....... How cool, now we don't really need to buy a DVD player for our TV.
