Having recently left my job, where I had access to an IBM T2 laptop, I decided to purchase an entry-level laptop to take with me on travels. After having done some online research (including three nice reviews here), I decided that the HP N3310 would do everything I needed at a great price.
And, after having owned this machine for a month, I'm quite pleased with it. Rather than purchase it new (at retail prices currently around $1,000), I decided to bid on a refurbished machine at Ubid. After two unsuccessful bids, I finally got a refurbished N3310 for $780.
This machine seems as fast and even more reliable than my much more expensive IBM T2 that I used to use. All spreadsheet, word processing, and database programs I've used work fine. The modem access has been very reliable and speeds are fast enough. The screen is relatively big for a laptop, and the display is of desktop-quality screens. The Polk Audio speakers, while nowhere near the quality you'd find in most desktop speakers, are still much better in quality and loudness than I've encountered in other laptop speakers. The mouse, if you're not used to a flat-screen finger-directed mouse (what's the exact term for these anyway?), takes some getting used to but is very easy after some practice.
The downsides? Well, there are a couple of minor ones. The fan for this machine is extremely loud when it comes on, so make sure you shut down your machine before you sleep -- it woke me up more than once because of the fan noise. And, the N3310 is quite heavy for a laptop -- I don't know the exact weight but I'd say around eight pounds.
All in all, though, I'd definitely recommend this machine to anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive yet reliable laptop, and many cheaper refurbished N3310s seem to be hitting the market now.
