I chose the HP N3370 at Best Buy when the store offered a 1 year same as cash plan. After spending several weeks researching laptops, including reading reviews on epinions, I decided to purchase the N3370. My biggest factor was the screen size and type. I was seeking at least a 14.1 inch active matrix TFT screen. TFT is a type of screen I believe. I wasn't really concerned about CPU because I use my laptop mostly for searching the web, typing, and occasionally writing code (I am a software engineer). These things do not require a huge amount of horsepower. After all, who really needs a faster CPU? Anyway, I am very happy with my laptop. It comes with windows 98, second edition, and some standard software, like Quicken and McAfee Virus Scanner.
The factor that mostly determines the price of the laptop is the screen size. You should definitely get the largest screen that you can afford. The only caveat to this is a larger screen is sometimes heavier, but your eyes will thank you. In addition to the size, one should consider the screen type. Always go with an active matrix, never passive matrix. An active matrix screen will provide a better display.
This laptop comes with a DVD-ROM. A DVD-ROM will allow you to play DVD's (screen size important again) in addition to regular CD usage (software and music). I find this feature very handy for long plane rides.
This laptop comes with 6GB of memory and 64MB RAM. This is more than adequate unless you are making your own movies. If you want to use some movie-making software for a digital camcorder, you should upgrade to 12GB and 96 MB RAM.
The laptop weighs 6.9 lbs, which is average for laptop weight.
The only negative is the heat from the CPU. This laptop came with an AMD K6 chip. I think if I had to do it again, I would pay the extra money for the intel III chip because it doesn't run as hot. With the AMD chip, the fan runs frequently and as a result makes a lot of noise.
One of the best features of this laptop is the touchpad mouse. You should definitely play around with the built-in mouse that comes with your laptop. I hate those mouse sticks that come with some laptops.
I haven't used the tech support, but I do know that HP does NOT have a toll-free number for support. So if you are a newbie who needs tech support, you should probably get a Gateway or Dell. These 2 companies have toll-free numbers for support.
Overall, I really like my laptop. It is very reliable and has provided me with the freedom I never had with my desktop PC.
