The HP Pavilion is a nice laptop at a reasonable price. It has nice features that I found quite useful. I bought mine for $1999 at COMP USA. It came with 550 Mhz AMD K6-2, 14.1" screen, 6 GB hard drive and a DVD.
The mouse pad has a good feel and is easy to use. (Those little mouse sticks on cheaper laptops are too twitchy for me.) Sony may have a slighter better look but the 14" screen on the HP has a nice clean picture. It works great for my needs. The DVD came ready to play though I have not tried it yet.
The software package does not come with Word or Excel but Microsoft Works that allows you to save documents in Word or Excel format. This feature was one of the main factors in my decision to purchase this laptop.
I also purchased an additional warranty of 3 years for $300. I recommend this since the factory warranty is only one year. It is a quality computer and I do not expect any problems however the insurance is good to have.
This was the best deal I could find to fit my needs and I am very happy with it.
