Hi There,
I once dreamed of owning an IBM Thinkpad for some time, then when my other Laptop got stolen from school and the insurance said we found an IBM Thinkpad that you might like to replace the one you had stolen, I thought my wish was answered. Not only was my Thinkpad light but it offered CD ROM and 38MB ram, although it might not seem like much it was at the time I got mine, with it's active matrix screen, pentium processor, cd rom, this machine was my wish come true. I was in a class of 32 students and when I walked into the room with the Thinkpad it caught alot of peoples eyes, they flocked my desk as I demonstrated it's options and power, they were in a state of awe.
Well some time passed and I droped my Thinkpad so I called tech support and told them what happened, they had a replacement onroute to my house before the box came for me to ship mine out, service?? MAN that was First Class, it would seem that my Thinkpad was sent in about 8 times within 2 years, and mainly for unseen problems like a busted foot on the back or the type 3 pointing device drifting, but each time I sent it out they sent me the box free of charge, and picked up the shipping both ways and I had the computer back in about 2-3 days time, never more.
As much as the Thinkpad is a GREAT computer the tech support was the best I have ever seen and I owned and operated a computer store so I have seen what kind of tech support is out there. I closed my store to move to Oklahoma but when I reopen it and sell laptops you can be assured that the only laptop computers that will be on the shelf will be Thinkpads.
This is not a promotional scheme either, but if you are going to buy a laptop I would recommend nothing other than a Thinkpad, it SOARS above the competition, I have seen alot of laptops and not one has compared in service and reliability.
Things to watch out for. . . well most only accept IBM products so using no-named brands of ram or hdd might not work, the other downside is the price for parts is painfully high, for 16MB of ram on this Thinkpad it cost me about 400$ at the time. If you are under warranty I would suggest buying the most extended you can, they cover the parts and one trip to the shop pays for itself.
