First of all, navigating to the area of the IBM website that sells refurbished equipment is difficult, so if you are looking there be careful. I had better luck getting there from Yahoo and searching for refurbished IBM than I did at the IBM website itself.
I bought my 380XD from the IBM website "used". IBM included a decent laptop case (a special offer for purchasers of used ThinkPads) along with the typical Windows 95 documentation and a well written owners manual. I believe I received the same manuals and documentation that a new purchaser would have received. The battery has worked well from day one, so I assume that it was new too.
I did have a problem with the AC Adapter. It failed after approximately 4 months, luckily I had purchased the 6 month extension to the warranty for $50. I never buy the extended warranty, but it seemed like a good idea with a used laptop. Unfortunately, I had misplaced the sales slip but, hey, I had copies of emails that had confirmed my purchase. To make a long story short, it was only after 3 phone calls, including a promise after the second call that they would ship me my AC adapter that they later reneged on, that I got my adapter. I think the poor girl who answered my third call is still crying, but I wasn;t going to be denied. When her supervisor got on the phone I convinced him that it was their fault that they didn't document my purchase (maybe they should run Oracle). Okay, I know, it was my fault too, but I'm not Big Blue.
Other than the AC Adapter the only other very minor complaint I would have is that the CD drive is sometimes touchy and requires that I re-insert CDs before they will work. The machine is very stable, hard to believe that it's running Windows. I only wish my desktop was this stable.
