I've had my IBM 240 since November 99 and really like it alot. Warning: I am fairly computer literate and don't use it as my main computer - just as my road machine. I really use it as a large PIM (I don't own nor believe in Palm Pilots - why have another machine when PCs are this small?) that also doubles as a PowerPoint presenter / email reader / mp3 player / and full MS Office computer for the road. For that purpose it is darn near perfect - small, light, good set of features, nice keyboard, good battery life (I keep the optional larger battery in my brief cast and tend to carry it around with the std battery). It has been 100% reliable and an adequate performer with 64mb memory.
I'm sure you understand it does not have a 1024 x 768 display (only 800 x 600 - much larger than a Palm!), integrated floppy drive (external one comes std), or CDROM (I access my main PC's CDROM over my home network to load software onto my 240 via a USB ethernet connection) - but it's exactly the omission of these devices that keep the size and weight down, and the power consumption low so the small battery can last long. If you can live with the trade-off of not having these devices, this is a great PC for the road - because of its size and weight, I bring it *everywhere*.
My two minor complaints are 1) no integrated ethernet port, so I carry a USB ethernet adaptor around and 2) it ships with a FAT-16 file system which I've converted to FAT-32 - a pain.
BTW, I have found IBM's web site support to be very good. You register your machine on it and they send you emails with BIOs updates, etc.
I also have read there is now a version of the 240 with a Pentium-III - again, though, this eats into battery life and size as I believe IBM only offers it with the larger battery - which sticks out the bottom of the unit. If the Celeron is OK for what you do (it is for me), I'd stay with it.
