In August of 1999, I went out to buy a laptop computer. I had no idea what to look for, so I just started to look at Toshibas. There was one thing I knew I wanted for sure in my new computer: the eraser thingy for a mouse - I absolutely hate the mouses where you have to slide your finger across a little pad. The "eraser" type are just easier to use. So one day I went out and I bought my Toshiba and in the store it seemed great. But once we got home it no longer seemed so hot. There was no way to adjust the brightness on it and that drove me nuts. I felt as though I had to wear sunglasses just to look at the screen. Another fairly major problem was the fact that 5 pixels were already red and burnt out; why they were I don't know.
So the next day we took the hour-long drive to go back and return it. Boy were they upset to see us do that! So we got our money back and I went to Circut City with my mother, and we looked at IBMs. My mother said that this one looked great- brightness controls and all. At first I was reluctant- it looked ugly to me, and it was black.
That same day I decided to buy it for $2,800. I took it home and only 1 pixel was burnt out. I was pleased. It was by far better that the Toshiba, and came with more standard features like software. I'm no computer expert, but to me this was the answer. It had everything we were looking for - 64MB, 6.4 gigs, CD-rom, 14.1"screen active matrix...
So if you are consider an IBM then you are already on the right track. Mine will be a year old in 2 months, and so far absolutely no problems. So I recommend that you get one.
