after several years of good Thinkpad experience, I changed to a TP 570 (366 PII, 128 MB RAM) last week, which I shouldn´t have done. Wasted time for OS and software installation and configuration. This machine is of such a poor quality like I never experienced before with any kind of computer: the right half of the LCD is significantly darker than the left, the keyboard is loose, the system clock sometimes runs 10 minutes ahead per hour, sometimes it´s 5 minutes behind. But the best thing is it´s extended PCMCIA capability. My TP eats those cards. When I first put in my PSION Gold Card Global, the modem just died off forever after 5 minutes of usage. Funny co-incidence, I thought, got a replacement (within 24 hours!), put it in and - the same thing happened again. I got angry on those PSION cards for a moment. Next day, office, LAN Card (the ultrabase extension has not yet been delivered, so I can´t dock this TP), the same. After 5 minutes, the card died off. So, no reason to be angry on PSION, but on IBM. Wherever they get those TPs produced, they must have very serious quality problems. Just leave your fingers from this model, although it WOULD be a nice machine for travelling around with it. At least, as long as you do not depend on that tiny little battery, which only lasts to a max of 90 minutes.
Probably, my next epinion will be about IBM Germany´s customer service, because things just start getting annoying right now, as I am trying to get this piece of debris replaced by something real.
Uh. It has been one week that I wrote this epinion. I then wrote a mail to Lou Gerstner telling him about my TP. What then happened might be described as a service-miracle. IBM needed 24 hours to ship a brandnew TP to me. I will then just swap harddisk and continue working. Great service, they even replace the destroyed PC Card. There must be some reason why IBM still is on top :)
