Well, IBM has done it again and with the TP570, they have created a laptop worthy of anyone out there. Of course, this does not mean that it is ideal for everyone. Why? Well........
My first IBM was a TP770. This computer is a real workhorse and can put up with all kinds of abuse, both physical and mental. The vinyl covered partially metal case puts up with lots of abuse and keeps on ticking. The 570 on the other hand, has much more plastic on it making it weigh incredibly light. Of course, with smaller, lighter, more plastic products, it will not hold up as well as my 770 did (still working just fine by the way). But at 4 lbs. and 1" thick when closed, this computer is truly amazing!!!
Speed:
My 570 boasts a PII 366 chip vs. my 770 with a PII 266 chip. Now, I thought that my 770 was fast enough for most stuff (and it really is) but there is definitely a difference. Not so much in how when I hit enter it calculates a spreadsheet or renders 3D graphics, rather, just in the normal everyday operations that it carries out. What do I mean? Well, starting up the compute, opening programs, shutting down - they all take much less time. That would be my only complaint with the 770. Other than that, whether you have a 266 or 666, you are not going to gain that much 'real-world' time in your life. Perhaps a few minutes a day.
Problems:
Well, as much as I love this computer, it is only fair to say that I had a problem with the modem when I first got it. Then again, for the price I paid for this model, it was well worth it. IBM was able to help me figure out the com port conflict that I was having and get me up and running. With the 770, I had many more problems than that and once again, the support from IBM was simply amazing. Plus, this model, considered also high-end, comes with the three year warranty from IBM and 24x7 support of their other 'executive' models, as I call them. This warranty is well worth any premium you may have to pay over other similar models.
Flexibility:
No, I haven't bought it yet because I still have my 770 for a full fledged workhorse laptop, but if you wanted to you could buy an ultrabase for the 570 which turns it into a desktop computer with slots for floppy drives, zip drives, batteries, or whatever else you want to put in. WIth two bays available, you can put in more or less whatever you need.
Long term:
Well, this laptop seems to be built as well as any other IBM product and I would not hesitate to recommend this laptop to anyone who is shopping for one. It appears as if there will be no further issues with this computer, as long as I don't drop it. Like any other computer, this one is fragile and will not hold up to the occasional drop or other oops like my 770 will. I don't think it is going to break as I am very careful, but if you are a laptop abuser, I would consider a more robust system. A word of advice: with a laptop, always back up your data. The hard drives are incredible susceptible to crashing (compared with desktops) and losing your data just plain is a bummer. Just by the fact that we always move them around makes the chance of killing the drive much higher.
