Notebooks are ALL ABOUT PORTABILITY.
I bought this computer in September 1999 when I began my MBA program (the program requires students to buy one if they don't own one). At 1.1" and 4 pounds, the ThinkPad 570 is ultra-portable.
This notebook is business/academic oriented. The unit does not have a CD/DVD player or a floppy drive built in (it does come with a floppy but you connect it externally). This didn't post a problem for me all year as I rarely needed the CD/floppy since I was constantly hooked up to the Net. If I ever needed to send a file, I'd e-mail it to them.
You can buy the Ultrabase in which you can install the floppy and the CD or DVD drive. This is recommended (I got one).
I really didn't have a choice in which notebook I was getting, but I am very happy with the result nonetheless. I love the point device (vs. the touchpad). As with all accessories, it takes a little while to get used to it, but once you do, you'll be so quick and accurate with it. My roommate had a touchpad in his computer. It took me several weeks to be totally comfortable with it. After getting the ThinkPad 570 and taking only a few days to get used to the point device, I had so much more control than I ever did on the touchpad.
Still the prominent feature is it being ultra thin and ultra portable while managing full size keys. If you like watching DVD's when you travel, then this really isn't for you (adding the ultrabase w/ DVD makes it double the size and double the weight).
And notebooks are ALL ABOUT PORTABILITY.
